University of the First Age and the Childrens University

The University of the First Age uses multiple intelligences to support accelerated learning. It was introduced in this school in November 2003 and is based on the premise that people learn in different ways and that everyone has a preferred style of learning.

The UFA technique is used to allow the children to learn the same things in different ways. They still pursue the normal curriculum but they are taught using different styles within the classroom, and in some cases outside of it, such as with pictures, using physical actions or singing.

There are 8 multiple intelligences :

Picture Smart (Visual/Spatial Intelligence)
Nature Smart (Naturalistic Intelligence)
Body Smart (Kinasesthetic Intelligence)
Word Smart (Linguistic Intelligence)
People Smart (Interpersonal Intelligence)
Number/Order Smart (Logical Intelligence)
Myself Smart (Intrapersonal Intelligence)
Music Smart (Musical Intelligence)

If you fancy working out what kind of learning style you have, then see the document below.

What is your preferred way of learning?

The school took part in a peer tutoring project in Autumn 2003, which involved pupils in years 5 and 6 to receive training in how to support the learning of other children. They then took part in classes in maths involving year 4 children and ,after an initial period, the teacher left the tutors to support the remaining children for half an hour. The idea is that children learn in different ways and are sometimes able to utilise their powers of explanation to much better effect than adults are, thus resulting in accelerated learning.
